Cookie Settings Explained

Cookie notices are usually long and confusing. Ours can be short, because there is very little to explain. This page covers what the banner does, what is saved, and how you can change your mind.

What we store

We save exactly one thing: the answer you gave to the cookie banner. It is kept in your browser's local storage, a small storage area on your own device, so that the banner does not greet you on every page. It contains no name, no email address and no identifier that could recognise you elsewhere.

What we do not use

  • No analytics or statistics cookies.
  • No advertising or retargeting cookies.
  • No social media buttons that load tracking code.
  • No third-party tags of any kind.

Choosing "accept" or "decline" makes no difference to what we collect, because in both cases the answer is the only thing saved. The buttons exist so you can see that clearly and dismiss the notice.

Changing or clearing your choice

Because your answer lives in your browser, you control it entirely. To reset it:

  1. Go into your browser settings and look for the area that manages stored site data.
  2. Search for this site's address.
  3. Clear the stored data for it.

The next time you visit, the banner will appear again and you can choose afresh. Browsing in a private or incognito window has a similar effect, since local storage is discarded when that window closes.

Why we keep it this simple

People often visit a health site while they are worried, unwell or reading on behalf of someone they love. We think that is exactly the wrong moment to be followed by advertisers or profiled by software. Leaving out tracking entirely is easier to explain, easier to trust and kinder to readers who simply want an answer and then want to get on with their day.

It also means the pages load quickly, even on a slow phone connection in a hospital car park.

Hosting and security

Our hosting provider may set short-lived technical cookies or keep server logs needed to deliver pages safely. These are not used for tracking or marketing. Our Privacy Policy explains how such logs are handled.
